5 things for the weekend 25.27
summer hobbies, chicken shawarma salad, taste and curation, marginalia, percival everett
Another new month is here, and we’re halfway through 2025, but instead of worrying that the year is going too fast, and thinking about all the things you still want to do (or even start), I encourage you to look at it as a clean slate (sorta), turn the page and move on smartly.
If you haven’t yet, take a look at what you hoped for this year, and evaluate and prioritise those dreams and plans. Also look at all the things you have done and experienced in the past six months, and maybe make a list, or journal about your favourite things so far.
Onward.
5 Things
1. Summer is the time of year when I feel that pull between just doing nothing and enjoying the hot lazy days, and making the most of every moment while I can. For the latter I like these ideas on free and low-cost summer hobbies. (via
)2. This chicken shawarma salad is absolutely delicious! My favourite part is the yummy tahini sauce.
3. Here’s a very thoughtful essay on the intersection of taste and curation, and what that means for us in today’s world of seemingly unlimited information. (via
)4. Are you a courtly or carnal book lover? For much of my life I’ve been the former, writing in a book, or even dog-earing a page, was highly frowned upon growing up. My views are slowly coming around because I am intrigued by marginalia. Especially as explained by Karen Rodriguez of Literary Fancy for its use in enriching your reading.
5. Percival Everett, author of James, reflects on the current state of the US, and how humour and irony (both of which he employs in his writing), can get people through difficult times.
