5 things for the weekend 23.18
words for book lovers, carnitas, photo challenge, rules for creativity.
At this time of year, I am usually more about flowers than candles, but our weather has become more typical (cloudy days, wind, rain), so I am indulging in some cosy comforts to set my creative mood. Lavender will always be my scent of choice (although I recently started using my favourite Green tea perfume again.) What’s your favourite scent for yourself or your surroundings?
5 Things
1. Can you be a book lover and not love words? Maybe. But either way I guarantee if you’re bookish you’ll love these words, and immediately add them to your daily vocabulary.
2. Many years ago I changed my approach to buying souvenirs when I travelled; no cheap trinkets emblazoned with the name of the country or city for me. I tried to only get locally made items, that would bring me back to the experience I had there. Madeline Diamond agrees with me in this essay about buying useful souvenirs.
3. I am loving Grant Snider’s refreshing take on Rules for Creativity. I really enjoy his comics, and it’s nice to read a longer piece from him. I highly recommend subscribing!
4. Do you need to have a burning passion for your job for it to be meaningful? Actor Christoph Waltz (who you might remember from Water for Elephants, or Inglorious Basterds) doesn’t think so. Read his interview at The Talks, then scroll though the entire catalogue.
5. My kid is happy to eat just about anything once it comes wrapped in a tortilla, so tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and other similar meals tend to be in heavy rotation here. Next up will be these InstantPot Carnitas.

Are you feeling frustrated about getting projects finished? I recommend gamifying it in one of five ways. Get a free PDF with my favourite tracking methods here.
Next month I’ll re running my craftnerdiness photo prompt challenge on Instagram again, so mark your calendars! Details to come soon.
In May we are reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka. Our discussion will be held on June 4th.
I am:
Reading: Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi
Listening: Sing 2 Soundtrack
Watching: Seven Kings Must Die
Making: a sketchbook filled with watercolour
Loving: lavender scented candles.
What are you doING?
“There was the one basic storyline, which everyone knew, with the few custom endings to choose now and again. Basic: humming grandmas and polycentric dancing and drinks made from tree sap and patriarchy.”
